Fitting a new deadbolt into a freshly bored hole in a painted front door

Published before we drive, not after

From $65–$159 per lock, labour plus the $19 service call. A like-for-like swap is quick. A door that has never had a deadbolt needs boring and a mortised strike.

That is a starting range. The top of it can move, and the final figure depends on the lock, the door and what the technician finds on site. On the large majority of jobs we land inside the published range, and the number is confirmed with you before any work begins. Prices run a few dollars higher in the outer-ring cities — that is drive time, nothing else, and each city page shows its own figure.

Included on every visit

  • ANSI Grade 1 and Grade 2 hardware
  • New bores drilled where a door has no deadbolt
  • Strike plates reinforced — the actual weak point in most doors
  • We'll tell you when the cheaper lock is genuinely good enough

What happens when we arrive

  1. We measure the backset and the existing prep
  2. If the door has never had a deadbolt, it is bored and the strike mortised
  3. Hardware goes in with 3-inch screws into the stud, not the jamb
  4. Alignment and strike are adjusted until it throws smoothly with the door shut

Typically 30–45 minutes per door for a like-for-like swap; longer if the door needs boring.

What to have ready

Nothing, unless you have already bought hardware you want fitted.

When this is the wrong call

A door that has dropped on its hinges or a frame that has moved needs the door fixed first. New hardware on a misaligned door will bind within weeks.

What people ask before booking

What does ANSI Grade mean?

It's a durability and security rating. Grade 1 is commercial-duty and strongest, Grade 2 is solid residential, Grade 3 is basic. For most homes a good Grade 2 deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate is the honest sweet spot.

Is a reinforced strike plate really worth it?

It matters more than the lock on most doors. Kick-ins usually break the door frame, not the deadbolt, so three-inch screws into the stud do more for your security than an expensive lock body.
